STARKVILLE, Miss.—Mississippi State is celebrating Earth Week, culminating with Earth Day Saturday [April 22], with a variety of student- and community-focused activities.

The university’s Office of Sustainability, in partnerships with Students for a Sustainable Campus and other groups, provides students ways to participate in campus sustainability efforts, while learning about ̫ӳ’s stewardship commitments and celebrating Earth Day.

Events include:

—Tuesday [April 18], 7 p.m., Plant swap in Old Main 2220, sponsored by Students for a Sustainable Campus and the Horticulture Club.

—Wednesday [April 19], 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Earth Day Fair on the Drill Field, featuring a student organization fair, carnival games and food.

—Wednesday [April 19], 5:30 p.m., Colvard Student Union, Room 325, the International Student Advisory Board hosts a “Coffee Culture Conversation” around the topic of climate change.

—Thursday [April 20], 2 p.m., Carlton Owen Lecture, Thompson Hall’s Tully Auditorium. The College of Forest Resources presents the series namesake, Carlton Owen, who will present “Life Lessons from the Environmental Edge.”

—Thursday [April 20], 7 p.m., Old Main 2220, Students for a Sustainable Campus hosts a Bee Hotel Workshop.

—Friday [April 21], 2 p.m., Students for a Sustainable Campus and additional volunteer participants will meet in The Junction to walk down University Drive to pick up trash in the Cotton District.

—Saturday [April 22], 8:30 a.m., Thompson Hall, the College of Forest Resources is hosting a volunteer opportunity to help establish a campus pollinator garden.

—Saturday [April 22], 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Earth Day Fair at Fire Station Park in Starkville, featuring sustainable practice workshops, food trucks, live music and an arts market. Additionally, there will be a free goat yoga event at the same location from 3-5 p.m.

Following the Earth Week observance, ̫ӳ’s Office of Sustainability also is sponsoring its regular glass recycling drive April 25, 1-5 p.m., in front of the Sanderson Center. ̫ӳ is competing with the University of Mississippi to see which school can collect the most glass. Participants may drop off glass that is rinsed, removing any container lids.
