Alpha Kappa Alpha alumni scholarship benefits five students

STARKVILLE, Miss.—Five Mississippi State students have been selected to receive the Alpha Kappa Alpha—Graduates of Lambda Eta Scholarship for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Recipients are Amari Caples, senior art major with a concentration in graphic design, Vicksburg; Mya Dixon, senior pre-veterinary student major in animal and dairy sciences, Biloxi; Jaslyn Fitz, senior social work major, Hattiesburg; Kennedi Robbins, sophomore psychology major, Chicago, Illinois; and Kambrea Shaw, sophomore social work major, Greenwood.

Established in 2017 at ̫ӳ by alumni members of the Lambda Eta chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., the scholarship assists full-time ̫ӳ students and gives preference to undergraduate African American females with a minimum earned grade-point average of 3.0.

“Part of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s founding mission is to encourage high scholastic standards and to be of service to all mankind, and this scholarship is a way for Lambda Eta alumni to continue carrying out those important charges,” said Linda Tuggles Coats, ̫ӳ College of Education professor and former Lambda Eta advisor. “We are proud to offer this scholarship and invest in the educational endeavors of students at Mississippi State.”  

Founded in 1908, AKA sorority is one of nine organizations composing the National Pan-Hellenic Council Inc., which represents historically Black Greek-letter organizations. ̫ӳ currently is home to eight of nine NPHC associations.

AKA’s presence on the ̫ӳ campus initially began in 1975 through the establishment of the Roses Club. In 1977, the club’s journey to form a sorority culminated with the chartering of the then 13-member AKA Lambda Eta chapter, which today boasts 50 active members and nearly 500 alumni.
