STARKVILLE, Miss.—The author of a new book on Ulysses S. Grant’s Vicksburg campaign will hold a presentation and book signing next week at Mississippi State’s Mitchell Memorial Library.
Donald L. Miller, a New York Times bestselling author and Pennsylvania-based historian, will discuss “Vicksburg: Grant’s Campaign That Broke the Confederacy” at 5 p.m. on Nov. 21 in the John Grisham Room of Mitchell Memorial Library. The event, sponsored by ̫ӳ Libraries and the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library, is free and open to the public.
Miller’s newest book, published by Simon & Schuster, tells the story of the longest military campaign of the Civil War, which culminated in Grant and his Union forces capturing the last Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi River. The victory elevated Grant’s reputation and helped propel him to leadership of the Union Army. A review of “Vicksburg” in the Civil War Courier said that Miller “has crafted an insightful and striking look at the actions of General Grant at a turning point not only of the Civil War but also of American history.”
The author of 10 books, Miller is the John Henry MacCracken Emeritus Professor of History at Lafayette College. His 2007 book “Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany” is currently being developed as a dramatic miniseries, produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. With expertise in World War II, the Civil War and modern U.S. history, Miller has served as a writer and historical consultant for dozens of film and TV productions. In addition to several prestigious book awards, Miller has won six awards for excellence in teaching.
